Twin-coil system in the energy and biomass industry
A twin-coil system consists of two heat exchangers that are connected to each other by means of a liquid heat transfer pump system. A water/glycol mixture is often used as a heat transfer fluid to prevent frost problems in winter. The warm air passes through the first heat exchanger, cooling the air and thus heating the fluid. The hot fluid then releases this energy in the second heat exchanger to the colder air stream. The liquid cools down again and is pumped back to the warming side.
Big advantage is that the 2 air streams can be located far away from each other, they are connected to each other with 2 insulated pipes and a pump. The energy demand can also be easily distributed to multiple customers with control valves. This way of heat recovery also prevents cross contamination of airflows, only the heat is reused. The efficiency of a twin-coil system is between 50 and 60%.
